Lumens, Wattage and Colour Temperature Explained
Understand the three lighting specifications buyers encounter most often and how to use each one when comparing modern LED products.
LED technology changed the way lighting products should be compared. Wattage is no longer a reliable shortcut for brightness, so buyers need to understand a few separate measurements.
Lumens measure light output
Lumens describe the quantity of visible light produced. Use delivered lumens and the fixture's optical distribution when judging whether a product can illuminate the intended area.
Wattage measures power consumption
Watts indicate electrical demand. Comparing lumens per watt helps show how efficiently products turn electricity into useful light, but efficiency should be considered alongside reliability and light quality.
Colour temperature shapes atmosphere
Measured in kelvin, lower colour temperatures appear warmer while higher values appear cooler. The best choice depends on the materials, activity, desired atmosphere, and surrounding daylight.
